Earth Day 2024: Legendary Voice Actor Debi Derryberry Teaches Kids About Going Green Through Music

11 Apr 2024

In the world of voice acting, few names shine as brightly as that of Debi Derryberry. With a career spanning over three decades, Derryberry has etched her mark on the industry as a prolific voice actor and singer/songwriter, leaving an indelible legacy across animation, video games, and beyond. From iconic characters to beloved animations, her voice has been the conduit for countless childhood memories and timeless entertainment.

One of her most notable roles is that of Jimmy Neutron, the ingenious boy genius from the animated series Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius. As the titular character, Derryberry's portrayal captured the essence of Jimmy's adventurous spirit and boundless curiosity, endearing her to audiences worldwide. The show's success catapulted Derryberry into the limelight, cementing her status as a household name in animation.

Derryberry recently released a new album for MPATH called Gotta Go Green: Educational Earth-Positive Children’s Music – a nine-track album that educates kids about the current state of our planet and how they could help keep it green and healthy.

“The inspiration for writing these songs in Gotta Go Green has to do more with the situation of the Earth currently and how our kids right now are the ones that are coming into the trouble we are making for it,” Derryberry said in an exclusive video interview with APM Music. “So, it’s super important to open a conversation with them, and to let them be aware of things like carbon footprint and air quality–and what creates bad air–recycling and such.”

On her being the voice of the beloved Jimmy Neutron, Derryberry said she auditioned for the job at Bell Sound Studio in Hollywood.

“All the girl voice actors who did little kid voices were there, and I knew I couldn’t do a textured (gravel) voice,” Derryberry said. “I did my best little boy’s voice without texture/gravel, and they picked it!”

Jimmy Neutron was initially an interstitial–a ten-minute cartoon–which was then called Johnny Quasar. It was one of the first CGI characters on television which became an iconic character for many generations.

About Earth Day 2024

Since its inception in 1970, Earth Day has served as a rallying cry for environmental activism and awareness, catalyzing a global movement to protect the planet and promote sustainable living. As we reflect on Earth Day 2024, it's essential to revisit the origins of this pivotal day and its evolution over the decades.

The idea for Earth Day was first proposed by Senator Gaylord Nelson, who looked to harness the energy of the burgeoning environmental movement to raise awareness about pollution and ecological degradation. On April 22, 1970, millions of Americans took to the streets in cities across the country to take part in rallies, marches, and teach-ins, calling for greater environmental protections and policy reform.

The inaugural Earth Day was an unprecedented success, capturing the public's attention and galvanizing support for environmental causes. It marked a turning point in the modern environmental movement, spurring the passage of key legislation such as the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, and the establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

In the years that followed, Earth Day grew into a global phenomenon, with countries around the world adopting the April 22nd date to celebrate environmental consciousness and promote sustainability. From community clean-up efforts to educational initiatives, Earth Day became a symbol of collective action and environmental stewardship.

Throughout its history, Earth Day has continued to evolve in response to emerging environmental challenges. In 1990, Earth Day went global, mobilizing millions of people in 141 countries to address issues such as climate change, deforestation, and biodiversity loss. The event served as a powerful reminder of the interconnectedness of environmental issues and the need for international cooperation.

Subsequent Earth Days have focused on a wide range of environmental themes, from renewable energy and conservation to sustainable agriculture and plastic pollution. Each year, Earth Day serves as an opportunity for individuals, communities, and organizations to renew their commitment to protecting the planet and advancing the cause of environmental sustainability.

Earth Day 2024 is on Monday, April 22nd.
